March Bulletin 2019

March was an exciting month for the Environmental Defender’s Office WA (EDOWA).

We started the month at the Court of Appeal for the Yeelirrie Appeal hearing. It was a great day in Court with our fantastic counsel advocating for our environmental laws to defend country and threatened species. See below for further details.

On 25 March the Australian Labour Party pledged to restore funding to Australia’s network of Environmental Defenders Offices. The commitment, totalling $14 million over 4 years, reinstates crucial Commonwealth funding which was withdrawn in 2013, and will expand the ability of EDOs including EDOWA to work together and provide free or low-cost legal services to people around Australia.

EDOWA welcomes the funding announcement and has published a media release drafted by the EDOs of Australia.

Mr Patrick Gorman, Federal MP for Perth, visited our offices to discuss the announcement with our solicitors.
